Louis Shores Early Years: Middle child of five – grew up in Cleveland, Ohio – son of Paul and Ernestine Steinberg.
High School: Moved to Toledo – a page in the public library.
College: (1922-26) Univ. of Toledo, English major – older brother, Joseph took the name, Shores – Louis followed suit.
Employment & Graduate Study: Mother moved family to New York – graduate program in education – City College of New York – reference assistant – New York Public Library – 1927 – master’s in education – 1928 – BS degree from the newly opened School of Library Service – Columbia University.
1st Professional Job: Librarian and professor – Fisk University – Nashville, Tennessee (1928-1933).
Doctoral Program: (1930-34) – Peabody College for Teachers – Nashville – program in education and history.
Marriage: Nov. 19, 1931 – “Gerry” Urist from Chicago.
Dean: 1933 – Library school – Peabody College for Teachers – offered the first regular course in the country in audiovisual education – 1937 – wrote – Basic Reference Books – became a standard textbook in library schools throughout the mid-sixties.
World War II: Special officer’s candidate school in the Army Air Corps, Miami – Served primarily in the China-Burma-India theater of war – part of a cryptographic unit – suffered at different times from undulant fever, malaria and dengue fever.
Dean: 1946 – FSCW (changed in 1947 to FSU) Library School.
Special Contributions: “idea” man – often leaving the “spade” work and follow-through to others – originated the library college concept in the USA and coined the term “generic book” – educator-librarian-author-editor-encyclopedist-library historian- and supporter of self-directed learning.
