Five (5) new faculty: Dean Larry Dennis, Pam Doffek, Ian Douglas, Nancy Everhart, Ken Fleischman.

Dean Larry Dennis - (Dean) earned his BS in Physics at the University of Michigan and his PhD in Nuclear Physics at the University of Virginia. Previously, he was Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs and Director of the Office for Distributed and Distance Learning (ODDL) at FSU. He has taught physics at FSU since 1979 and has won a University Teaching Award and two State of Florida Teaching Incentive Program Awards. In his role as Director of ODDL, he has gained extensive experience developing online degree programs and applying technology to instruction. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Southeastern University Research Association and is a member of the EDUCAUSE Advisory Committee on Teaching and Learning.

Pam Doffek - (Pam) (Associate Librarian) earned her master's degree in Library Science from the University of Arizona in Tucson. Her Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, is in Industrial Technology. Pam has a background working with military libraries supporting the academic, special, and public library needs of active duty and retired military, family members and civilian employees in both the Air Force and Navy. Her interests include library as “place” in the virtual diaspora, and practical application of library theory. She is a member of ALA and SLA.

Pam Doffek

Ian Douglas(Assistant Professor) earned his PhD (1996) in Computer Science from Glasgow Caledonian University, M.Sc. (1985) in Computing and Cognition from the University of Warwick, and an MA (hons) (1984) in Psychology from the University of Glasgow. He holds a joint appointment as faculty in both school of Information Studies and the Learning Systems Institute (LSI). He is director of LSI’s Knowledge Communities Research Group (KCRG), which is a multidisciplinary group of full-time researchers and graduate students from five departments across campus. Dr. Douglas’ research interests are centered on discovering new ways to support and improve human performance. He is concerned with issues such as domain understanding, computer supported collaborative work, user-centered design, knowledge management and creative problem solving.

Ian Douglas Nancy Everhart (Associate Professor) earned a B.S. from Kutztown University, M.Ed. from the University of Central Florida, and Ph.D. from Florida State University where she was the recipient of the Madge Hutcherson Fellowship. She has been employed as a high school library media specialist in Pennsylvania and most recently as a faculty member at St. John's University, New York. Dr. Everhart has also served as a summer faculty member at the University of Hawaii since 1994. Her courses include the instructional role of the information professional, design and production of media resources, and school media internships. She serves as the Director of the school media program at FSU and was the 2003 Sara K. and Ted Srygley lecturer.

Nancy Everhart

Ken Fleischmann (Assistant Professor) earned his PhD from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. His educational background is in computer science, anthropology, and science and technology studies. His research and teaching interests include user-centered design, information ethics, and the societal implications of information technology. Specifically, his current research focuses on the design and use of educational software, the ethical implications of values embedded in information technologies, and the influence of popular culture on the career choices and research trajectories of scientists and engineers. He has also received multiple research grants from the National Science Foundation.

Ken Fleischmann

School is the second largest behind Drexel in the United States and has the second largest faculty behind Syracuse.

Dr. Hart is honored by the Florida Association for Media in Education (FAME) with the first "Life Time Achievement Award".

Thirty-one research proposals were submitted by the Faculty and total grants funded were $588,289.

December

-Herbert R. Defuniak (MS 1965 LS) of Lake Worth, FL died December 13, 2004.

October

-Patricia Sikes (BA 1960 LS) of Winter Haven, FL died of heart failure on Friday Oct. 8, 2004 at Winter Haven Hospital. She was 67 years old and was born in Miami on Nov. 29, 1936; she was a longtime resident of Polk County. She was a homemaker, a Methodist, and graduated from Florida State University.

-Cynthia Iacono (MS 1987 LS) died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004. She was 51 years old and was born on Jan. 27, 1952 in Buffalo, N.Y. Memorial contributions can be made to the FLC Cindy Iacono Memorial Bookfund, made payable to the FLC Foundation. Mail checks to Chandler Jackson, John S. Reed Library, Fort Lewis College, 1000 Rim Drive, Durango, CO 81301.

September

-Betty B. Tyson (MS 1979), a resident of Montgomery, AL, died at the age of 53 Sunday, September 5, 2004.

-Ruth Erie Hansell (MS 1964 LS), 83, died Sept. 29, 2004. She was born in Avon Park and lived in St. Lucie County since 1960, coming from Davie. She was a librarian.

-Lucille Buckels Leslie (MS 1955) of Rogers, AR, died September 30, 2004. She was born June 19, 1907 in Jasper, to Robert C. Buckels Sr. and Luanna Crews Buckels. She was married to Thomas Dale Leslie, who preceded her in death. Mrs. Leslie moved to Arkansas in 1997 from Florida where she taught high school math and history for approximately 50 years. She earned a Bachelor s Degree in Education from the University of Florida, and a Master s Degree in Library Science. Mrs. Leslie wrote poetry, and traveled to Hawaii, Europe, the Orient and extensively in the United States. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

August

-Katherine C. McCallie Brubeck (MA 1954) of Salmetowne, NC ,died August 13, 2004 . She served as librarian at Jacksonville Junior College and director of Bard Library, Community College of Baltimore , MD. She was listed in the first edition of Who's Who of American Women.

July

-Merle Souter Doran (BA 1943, MA 1949), died July 7, 2004. She taught elementary and high-school in Taylor County and was a librarian and library science professor at FSU. Katherine K. Yarish (BA 1985 & MS 1988), 44, passed away July 25, 2004. Katy was a Media Specialist who loved the children and staff at Loretto Elementary School. She was a member of the Jacksonville Jewish Center. Survivors include her husband Paul; two great children, Joseph and Samuel, whom she loved with all her heart; and sisters Paula, Julia and Shaun. Graveside Funeral Services will be held at New Center Cemetery (43rd and Liberty Streets) at 10:30 on Tuesday July, 2004 with Rabbi Jonathan Lubliner officiating. Arrangements by Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 4115 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL.

April

-Karen Chepko (Advanced MS 1994, MS 1993) FSU Strozier Library technical services librarian and a doctoral candidate at the School died in Tallahassee on April 16, 2004. She had been a past President of the School’s Alumni Association among other extensive professional activities. Gifts can be made in Ms. Chepko’s memory to the Information Studies Earmarked Scholarship Fund #3920.
