Internships

Internships offer the student an opportunity to learn how information studies principles and techniques are applied in a structured setting. The internship experience is a collaborative undertaking by the student, faculty member, internship coordinator, site supervisor, and student peers. Although the primary responsibility for a successful internship experience rests with the student, the faculty member, internship coordinator, site supervisor, and student should all be involved in the design, monitoring, and evaluation of the experience.

Internships are voluntary and available to all students on the basis of availability. Internships may take place in a variety of settings; however, the host agency has the right to accept or reject any applicant for an internship at its facility.

Interns spend a minimum of 45 hours per credit earned at the work site. From 1 to 6 credits may be earned; these credits may be earned in one or more semesters and at one or more sites. Six credits is the maximum for the total of all experiences. Three semester hours of credit require approximately nine (9) hours work per week during a 15-week semester.

Some internships are paid, others are not. An intern may receive both credit and pay if the latter is available at the site.

An intern may not receive credit for a job at which he/she is already working or at which he/she will be working once the internship is finished. The internship is a focused work experience with the primary purpose of learning, the secondary purpose of providing meaningful work for the site. An intern may participate in an internship at the same work site at which he/she is employed only if the internship is distinctly different from the regular job.
