Graduate Program

The School of Library & Information Studies Master degree and certificate programs prepare students for the many and varied careers which can be found wherever information and information technologies are at work: in public, academic, and governmental libraries; entrepreneurial businesses; large corporations; consulting and research groups; legal organizations; schools at all levels of education; non-profit organizations across a wide spectrum such as museums, archives and medical institutions; and local, state, national, and international government agencies.

The Master of Science (M. S.) is the degree typically earned by students preparing for a career as a professional librarian or IT specialist. Students may opt to complete the Master of Arts (M. A.), but additional course work may be required to meet liberal arts requirements for that degree. The Master's degree is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

The Master of Arts (M. A.) degree may be earned by students who opt to complete 6 or more semester hours of graduate credit in an area of liberal arts approved by the College. In addition, they must demonstrate proficiency in a foreign language.

The Specialist Degree is a post-master degree. Students who pursue it are interested in becoming aware of new areas within the field of information studies and in improving or developing skills and additional competencies in the field. As a result of this focus, students acquire the knowledge and competencies to perform at high levels within areas of specialization. The program is planned cooperatively with faculty members who will help tailor the program to meet your professional needs.

The Juris Doctor/MS joint degree program leads to both a Juris Doctor (J. D.) Degree from the FSU College of Law and a Master of Science Degree from the School of Library & Information Studies. Graduates of this program are particularly suited to work in law libraries and other organizations involved with the creation and dissemination of legal information.

Specializations guide your course selection in order to facilitate achievement of your career goals. Specializations include General Librarianship, Information Organization, Leadership & Management, Reference & Instruction, School Media, Technology & Networking, Web Design, and Youth Services.

Certificates are offered for six graduate-level certificate programs: Leadership and Management, Museum Studies, Reference Services, School Library Media Leadership, Web Design and Youth Services. All except Museum Studies can be earned online.
