Every year a School of Library & Information Studies alumnus is nominated for the Distinguished Alumni award. Nominees must be active professionals with undergraduate or graduate degrees earned from the School. The award is based on the full range of the candidates professional activities, significant contributions to librarianship, and outstanding professional achievement:
Tom SloanSchool of Library & Information Studies
Tom W. Sloan is the Executive Director of the DuPage Library System (DLS), a regional, mulitype library system consisting of more than 130 members in over 300 libraries in the greater Chicago area of Cook, DuPage, Kane, and Will Counties. Sloan received his Bachelor of Science in Education degree from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, before attending Florida State University where he received a Master of Science in Library Science degree. Sloan has held many offices in professional associations including the American Library Association (ALA), Association of Specialized & Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA), Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), Delaware Library Association (DLA), and Florida Library Association (FLA).
